Metallography – Grinding & Polishing

Grinding and polishing is the final stage in the metallographic sample preparation process and consists of several steps. Each step uses finer abrasive than the previous one, the ultimate goal being to produce a deformation-free, scratch-free and highly reflective sample surface. The sample may need to be examined, either etched or unetched, to reveal the microstructure of the material. It frequently happens that contrasts in the material are only visible after a successful etching step.

The grinding and polishing process can be performed on manual, semi-automatic or fully automatic machines. There are available different options, in terms of possibilities and additional accessories, to complete the configuration of the machine suitable for your needs – working wheels with diameters from 200 up to 350 mm, dosing units for suspensions, wide range of single and central pressure adaptors. With the semi-automatic grinding and polishing machines both single and central pressure can be applied. The central pressure allows grinding and polishing of embedded, unembedded and oversized specimens. In combination with a removal measurement, grinding can be done automatically to a defined sample height if required. With single pressure, up to six samples (depending on sample holder) of different sizes can be processed in one sample holder by pressing on individual plungers.

The automated unit combines grinding and polishing station, ultrasonic cleaning station, media changer, dosing system and an integrated settling tank into one machine. Intuitive operation via touchscreen and a user friendly system for tightening and releasing the sample holder allow for quick results.

The compact automated process system provides fully automatic grinding and polishing including the cleaning and drying process. The visualized program control detects/records every process making it documentable and repeatable at all times. The stations may be combined in 4 rows or 8 rows as system-integrated versions according to requirements.

Additional machines like vibro-polishing, electrolytical polishing and etching are also included in the product range.

To reach good results is very important to use the proper consumables – we offer a wide range of consumables and accessories requite to complete the sample preparation process.
